August 2009 from Lady Captain

The weather for the match golfing season has not been as good as we would have liked, but  we have at least managed to play all the matches. Many thanks to all who have played.  We have now completed our handicap matches and won 3 lost 1. This is a great result. Well done to all the ladies who took part, I’m proud of you all.

We all had a great day on our Lady Presidents day on 11th July, thanks to Dorothy for all the great prizes.

25th July was my Captain’s day. The general feedback was that a great day had been had by all, partly I am sure because the weather was kind to us. The ladies were presented with a small gift on arrival and were given a new for old golf ball. Strawberries and raspberries with cream were provided at the halfway house. At the end of the day we all enjoyed a glass of Cava with all the nibbles. A wonderful buffet was provided by Lewis and his team after the presentation. A table top magician gave us a little amusement during the meal.

I received lots of cards, presents and flowers and my house and garden were like a florist‘s shop. It was a day I thoroughly enjoyed and will always remember. Thank you all for making it such a wonderful day. Photographs are available - Bubbles

Bar & House

The Bar and catering staff  have been busy throughout the summer months with the multitude of golfing activities usual for the time of year.   Of particular note were Captain's and President's Days where evening entertainment was provided click here for photos.  ‘Fingers 'n Fumbs’ were particularly impressive and we are trying to get them back for New Year’s Eve.

We were less successful with our Summer Ball, which had to be cancelled due to lack of support.  Your Bar & House committee has reviewed how we present such functions and is working on a number of improvements, which include advertising and event timing.  I hope you have noticed the more professional event advertising on the tables and the new display area in the Clubhouse Foyer.

We intend to sell tickets in advance for future functions, which will be available from committee members, team captains and the Bar and Pro Shop.  Finally, you will shortly receive a questionnaire where we are trying to ascertain your views and requirements to enable us to provide the functions/entertainment you want.

The next social event is on the 19th September when we will have 2 Leicester City football legends sharing their experience with anecdotes and answering your questions.  There will also be food so please come along with your friends to support this function.

The Clubhouse has been repaired/painted on the course side and work will soon commence to complete the front of the building, which is long overdue.  The patio tables and chairs have been cleaned and will be treated at the end of the Summer to ensure their longevity.  We are assessing the scope and cost of refurbishing the men’s locker room, showers and toilets and also reviewing the smoking arrangements.

Mixed Blessings

Can you imagine a better Sunday afternoon - playing golf (absolutely free) on other private Leicestershire Golf Clubs; great company; followed by good food at an affordable price? This is Mixed Golf.  Contary to popular belief this is not only for married couples but it is also open to any member who cares to add their name to the list. Why not give it a try, you never know you might enjoy yourself! The list is in the lobby of the Gents' changing room.  Lesley needs new  applicants - so please click here for more details and the latest results.

Lady New Membership Drive

The advertisement in the Lutterworth Swift Flash has been very successful, offering new opportunities to aspiring Lady Golfers, with 30 set to attend for coaching and playing a few holes on Sunday 23rd August. A further 11 have their names down for future events as we felt 30 was the most that we could accommodate this time. Hopefully this will result in filling our only vacancies - Lady's Membership - and achieving an excellent drive for full membership from the Marketing Team over the past 12 months.

Cemex day

On Friday 3rd July, 52 players from Cemex (previously Rugby Cement) visited the club, and despite the initially poor weather had a great day.  It is encouraging to be chosen by such an important local employer to host their golf day and hopefullly it signals a long term association with Lutterworth.

Our thanks to the Pro Shop who ably marshalled the day ensuring minimum disruption to members and thanks also to the green keepers who managed to get the course in a playable condition after the overnight deluge.  In addition to the direct income from the green fees, the bar had a great day's takings which all goes to help club funds.

Strong winds & Coconuts - What a Cocktail on Presidents Day

A Caribbean Flavour pervaded Lutterworth when nearly 200 members took part to enjoy President's Day last Saturday.

Senior Moments

Seniors Bring Home the Silverware.

We have had a hectic couple of months with two matches or other competitions most weeks.  click here for more details.

Of our 38 scheduled matches we have now played 31 and I am happy to report that we have lost only 7. The Trophy for the match we played against Kilworth Springs, was given some years ago by Laurie Lott, who was a member of both clubs, and it is played for at home or away in alternate years.  We won the Trophy at home this year when we played on the 20th of July.

I took the opportunity of our Away Day to announce that Eddie Hemsley is to be our new Seniors Captain for next season. Indications are that Eddie is a very popular choice - Roy Tomlin (Seniors Captain)

Festival week (next week) - Still time to book your teams

This is Lutterworth's first festival week and we are all hoping it will be a great success.

There is still time to book for Mixed competitions on:- Monday August 24th and Tuesday August 25th.  The senior's and men's open competitions on 26th and 27th are fairly full but please check if you would like to enter.

On  Friday 28th there is a corporate day aimed at allowing members to promote their businesses by bringing teams of 4 players - much cheaper than running a golf day.  There are still some times available for this event.

Hurry and book your tee times, we look forward to seeing you there.  Booking sheets are available in the Pro Shop (01455 557199) and competitions are open to members and non-members.

The Alternative 100 club

If you have missed out on our first 100 Club, and have seen our lucky winners cashing in -  here is your opportunity to join our New Alternative 100 Club.

A new 100 club has been launched and numbers are available and being selected from 15 August.  Please let the office know if you would like to join and select your preferred number whilst you can.  The cost is £30 per year with monthly prizes of £100 and £25 when all the numbers are taken.  A list of allocated and free numbers will be displayed in the clubhouse.

New web site

You may have noticed that the club web site has had a revamp which I hope you agree makes it appear more modern.  The new structure of the site makes it easier to add new features such as a members area.

Mind matters

You have probably heard the expression "deal with it".  What this means in practise is being able to rid yourself of anger after making a poor shot or putt.  It is all about being able to release negative emotion.

One of the many ways of "dealing with it" is to focus on where the feeling of anger in your body is coming from and to release from that point by relaxing your breathing etc. from that point, as you release notice how that feels different. You can carry out these exercises while walking between shots for example.

If you would like help working through any of the Mind Matters subjects please contact me.

B Team news

The season is going well with 18 matches played and only 6 remaining; plus the Captain's Awayday and End of Season Competition. I think the results have been pretty good with 8 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses.  As always with B Team matches it is as much about meeting new people and visiting different courses and having a good time.  Unfortunately, we lost the match at Hinckley and, therefore, the Burworth Cup, despite fielding a strong team. Congratulations to Hinckley. However, we are still in the cup matches at Nuneaton, Cosby and Ullesthorpe.

The Awayday at Collingtree Park is almost upon us and anyone not confirmed needs to let me know immediately.

Let me finish by saying how much I have enjoyed being Captain this year and I hope next year's Captain has as much fun - Ian Champion
